Full-Flexibility, Grid-Interactive/Off-Grid Inverter
Detailed Description
The Radian Series GS4048A-01 Grid/Hybrid™ (full-flexibility grid-interactive/off-grid) Inverter/Charger is engineered toward one goal: making system design and installation easier and faster in grid-interactive and comprehensive off-grid applications. The new Radian Series inherit the hallmark features of the original design, including: dual AC inputs for grid/generator flexibility with no external switching required, unparalleled surge capability and operational stability, easy field upgradeability and stacking capability for large system scaling, simplified system commissioning through a powerful, easy-to-use configuration wizard, and multi-mode operational flexibility.
In addition, both models have a new Advanced Battery Charging (ABC) profile option to support leading-edge battery technologies such as Lithium-Ion and others, and enhanced diagnostics for improved performance. And both incorporate OutBack’s GridZero technology, a superior level of intelligence in energy management for self-generation and self-consumption programs, providing precise balancing between using stored energy, solar and utility power, blending-in the latter to overcome surges and load spikes when needed. GridZero operation makes it possible for a smaller inverter and battery system to perform like a much larger one when required, putting stored and renewable energy sources to work and minimizing grid dependence. GridZero technology make the new Radians ideal for use in complex utility environments such as California and Hawaii.
The GS8048A and GS4048A-01 are certified to UL1741 SA for US applications, and CSA C22.2 No. 107.1 for Canada, and is IEC 62109-1 certified to meet the most stringent worldwide PV safety and emission standards.
This product is for selected North, Central and Latin American markets.

Simple integrated design
For the first time, nearly all of the components
you need are combined in a single package.
No matter what the application, no matter what
the power requirement, we make it easy:
Everything’s seamless. Easy to install. Simple and
intuitive to live with.
Unsurpassed engineering to handle load surges
Keeping the lights on is easy. But what happens to
the computer, wide-screen TV and other sensitive
electronics loads if you need to power the well
pump? The Radian Series is unique in its ability
to support large dynamic load variations without
voltage spikes or sags.
True energy independence
Basic grid-tie systems can sell back power from a
renewable energy source, but only grid-interactive
systems can power the load if the grid fails. The
Radian Series Inverter/Charger’s dual AC inputs
also provide the flexibility to connect to the grid
and recharge the batteries from a generator. So
you have a continuous power supply, even if
emergency conditions last a week or more.
A power solution that scales
Finally, your customers can get the security of
a grid-interactive solution combined with the
ease of a basic grid-direct PV system. 120/240V
output integrates directly into standard home
wiring, while the modular, parallel architecture
combined with OutBack’s robust HUB Communications Manager provides the ability to build
a system to power nearly any load imaginable
Radian Series Technologies
GridZero
The newest of the Grid/Hybrid Radian’s seven input modes, GridZero provides the perfect balance between utility power and stored renewable energy. By allowing a home or business to satisfy most of its power needs with renewable sources, grid supplied power is only tapped when load demand exceeds a pre-set threshold. While the Radian is still grid-connected, grid dependence can be reduced to zero whenever possible. GridZero technology offers four critical advantages compared to typical systems:
Higher System Economics : By maximizing the contribution of renewables to total energy consumption, selling back to the grid is no longer required for system Return on Investment (ROI).
Lower Cost-of-Entry : Through seamless blending of grid power and renewable energy sources, a smaller system can perform like a much larger
one, reducing equipment and installation costs.
Greater Simplicity : Because the Radian Series remains connected and synchronized to the grid, no destabilizing transfer is required when grid power is needed.
“Best Case Scenario” Design : As energy policies and incentives change, GridZero technology can prioritize self-consumption and offset over sell-back to always deliver the best renewable energy value possible.
Advanced Battery Charging
OutBack built its reputation on legendary off-grid reliability and battery backup expertise. That background is
thoroughly built into the new Radians. In addition to GridZero Technology, the new Radians also feature an Advanced Battery
Charging (ABC) profile option. Advanced Battery Charging offers
expanded charging voltage and time parameters,
enabling system designers to accommodate the specific charging profiles
and algorithms of newer energy storage technologies including:
Lithium Ion Batteries
Aqueous Ion Batteries
Flow Chemistry Batteries

The Future of Grid-Tie Stability
As more PV is installed on electrical grids, grid operators need flexible tools to help ensure stability and reliability. Areas with the highest PV penetration rates (Hawaii and California) will soon require grid interconnected systems to have "Grid Support" functions.
OutBack Power is certifying the Radian Series inverter/chargers (along with the FXR Series in the near future) under the new UL 1741 SA test standard to demonstrate compliance with these new requirements from CA Rule 21 and HECO Rule 14H.
What is UL 1741 SA and When Does it Take Effect?
UL 1741 SA is the new safety test standard certifying products which meet the rigorous requirements needed to ensure safe and reliable operation in support of grid modernization efforts. Grid support or "smart inverter" functionality will be required by Hawaii and California beginning September 8, 2017.
Although Hawaii and California are the first states to require grid support functions, expected updates to the IEEE 1547 interconnection standard will make these functions mandatory throughout most of North America within two to three years.
Is Grid Support Important?
As the PV market has grown, the industry has seen increasing grid instability, voltage rise limits, and a lack of standard communication protocol. With added grid support functions, the Radian Series inverter/chargers are being listed to UL 1741 SA, solving key grid integration challenges. UL 1741 SA compliance is planned for OutBack's FXR A Series in the near future.
With the advent of grid support technology, UL 1741 SA compliant models can regulate voltage and power, and they can prevent loss of power generation due to grid disturbances.
