KidWind Mini Wind Turbine with Blade Design

Demonstrate the power of the wind with an affordable and rugged wind turbine. This is an easy-to-build turbine that will light an LED bulb and play a tune. The highly efficient blades will produce plenty of power in a slight breeze.

The MINI with Blade Design allows students to perform basic blade experiments on a desk using a small house fan.

The MINI Wind Farm contains three wind turbines, so young scientists can explore wind farm characteristics and series and parallel power arrangements.

  • What is the difference between the MINI Turbine, the Basic Wind Experiment Kit, and the Advanced Wind Experiment Kit?

    The MINI can perform some basic experiments, but it was designed primarily to demonstrate wind power and energy transformations. While we tend to use basic and advanced kits at our trainings, some teachers prefer to have students perform blade design experiments on small towers at the desktop level. The MINI also makes it very easy to explore wind farms.

  • How tall is the MINI?

    The MINI is about 14 inches tall.

  • What are the blades made out of?

    The blades are made out of recycled plastic bottles. They are very efficient, and don't require much breeze to light an LED.

  • What does the small board with the LEDs do?

    The Sound & Light Board demonstrates that the energy of the wind can be transformed into electrical energy, light, and sound. When powered by the MINI turbine, one of the LED lights will blink, and the other one will stay lit. Additionally, a small sound chip in the board will play a tune.

  • Why would I want to make a wind farm of MINI Turbines?

    Creating a wind farm will allow you to explore series and parallel circuits. If you think of the turbines like batteries, you can wire them one way to increase voltage or wire them the opposite way to increase current. You can also see what happens when turbines shade each other and how downwind turbines are affected.

  • Will the MINI Wind Turbine run the Water Pump?

    Yes, if you configure a wind farm properly you can run the Water Pump.

  • Will the MINI work outdoors?
