KidWind GenPack

The GENPack allows students to construct their own electrical generator and perform experiments with electricity and magnetism. Changing variables in the generator design will impact current and voltage output. The GENPack is perfect for physics and electrical students exploring Faraday's law, induction, AC/DC electricity production, and energy transformations. KidWind recommends this kit for advanced middle school students and older.

The GENPack was originally designed as an add-on to the Advanced Wind Experiment Kit, but it can also be used as a stand-alone device.

Length 12 in.

You Can:

  • Perform experiments with Faraday’s Law, electricity, magnetism, AC/DC, and energy transformations
  • Couple with other wind energy experiments like blade design

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How much power can this generator make?

A well-designed GENPack spinning at high RPMs can generate a few watts. We have built GENPacks that produce over 16 volts at 0.2 – 0.4 Amps. We think we could do even better if we had more time to tinker!

  • Can I use this generator in a KidWind Challenge competition?

No. You cannot use this generator in a KidWind Challenge National Competition. You can, however, use it in the web competition.

  • What size is the driveshaft?

The GENPack driveshaft is approximately 1.95 mm wide. The Wind Turbine Blade set will friction fit well, but the KidWind Hub is slightly loose. A drop of glue or a small shim will allow you to use the KidWind Hub direct-drive on this driveshaft. The shaft was designed to work with the small pinion gear of the Wind Turbine Gears set.

  • Do I have to have the Advanced Wind Experiment Kit to use the GENPack?

No, but we do recommend it for a wide range of engaging experiments.

  • Can I get a bigger magnet for my GENPack?

Sure - cool idea! You can find all kinds of magnets online at K & J Magnets. Keep in mind that you will need to be extra careful with a stronger magnet—watch your fingers!

  • Is the magnet strong?

YES! Pull force = 25 lbs!

  • Will this generator light an LED?

    Yes

  • Is this AC or DC?

It is AC. Use the included rectifier for DC.
